Delivery (soil, mulch, plants)—$165
Target spend (materials only — labor is separate)≈ $3,775
Spend smart: Buy healthy plants — good leaves, white roots, not root-bound. Get the sizes listed (3-gal shrubs, 1-gal perennials). Don't let them upsell bigger plants or "designer" mulch. Skip: landscape fabric (we mulch instead), decorative pots, fertilizer spikes. Buy compost & mulch in bulk by the cubic yard (way cheaper than bags) and pay the $165 to deliver it — don't haul 6 yards in a car. Keep materials under $4,000.

Tools (bring your own or rent): 4 shovels, 2 digging forks, 2 rakes, 1 wheelbarrow, utility knife, work gloves. Optional: sod cutter rental (~$80/day) only if the old turf is thick.

Step B — Getting plants home & keeping them alive

How to store the plants before planting

  • Keep them OUT of direct sun. These are shade plants — sun will burn the leaves. Stage them on the shady/north side of the house or in the garage.
  • Water every day in the pots. Pots dry out fast. If the top inch of soil is dry, water it. On a hot day, check twice.
  • Plant within 2–3 days. They can survive 4–5 days in pots if shaded and watered, but sooner is better.
  • Keep upright, don't stack. Bring them in the garage overnight so deer don't eat the Hosta.
Step C — Call the staffing company (1–2 days ahead)

Exactly what to say

“Hi, I'd like to hire [number] general laborers for a landscaping install in Tenafly, NJ 07670. It's two days, about 8 hours each day, starting [date] at [time]. The work is ground prep and planting — digging, hauling soil and mulch, and planting shrubs and perennials. It's physical outdoor work. Spanish-speaking is totally fine — I have all the instructions in Spanish. What's your hourly bill rate, and can you confirm workers' comp and insurance are covered? Do they come to the site or do I pick them up, and what time do they start?”
  • Use the headcount from the Work tab (default 4). It's fine if they only speak Spanish.
  • Expect a bill rate around $28–$32/hr per worker. Confirm comp + insurance are on them.
  • Lock the start time and meeting spot. Have water, gloves, and the printed Spanish sheets ready.
Step D — When the crew arrives

Run the day

  • Greet them — press the welcome audio below, it plays in Spanish.
  • Hand each guy his sheet — print buttons are on the Work tab (one per worker).
  • Show them the phone: every job has a 🔊 button that speaks Spanish, and the green chat answers questions in Spanish.
  • Walk the site. Point out the 20 ′ × 40 ′ bed and which side is the house.
  • Start with Phase 0 (removal & prep). Don't plant until prep is done and you check the layout.
  • Check off jobs as they finish. If a guy doesn't show or leaves, change the headcount / mark him absent and the board re-splits the work automatically.
